Last November, I had the incredible opportunity to work as a cinematographer on a documentary about Antoni Tàpies, one of the most influential figures in contemporary art. The project took me to Buffalo, where I explored some of his remarkable artworks and had insightful conversations with curators. It was an unforgettable experience to delve into his visionary legacy and contribute to preserving his story through film.
A century ago, Antoni Tàpies was born in Barcelona. To honor his legacy, a documentary draws on TVE's remarkable archive and features contributions from artists across various disciplines, who share personal insights into their connection to the renowned Catalan painter. Antonio López, who knew Tàpies, emphasizes embracing non-figurative art, highlighting its simplicity. The poet Miriam Reyes and musicians Adriana Calcanhotto and Francisco Contreras (Niño de Elche) explore his ties to poetry and music. Cristina Iglesias, who collaborated with him at the 1993 Venice Biennale, reflects on his influence on her methods and inspiration. Toni Tàpies Barba, the artist’s son and a poet, offers an intimate glimpse into Tàpies' life, while filmmaker Albert Serra examines one of his key works. The artistic collective Boa Mistura celebrates his legacy, connecting it to contemporary art forms.
